My husband and I are looking to move away from the closet-sized studio we currently live in on th UES and actually begin our lives together in a real home.  We looked at other communities but nothing spoke to our hearts like Astoria.
I'm currently reviewing Craigslist, Rent.com, Rent-Direct, and a few other sites along with using the broker that got us our current studio.
We're hoping to find a one-bedroom apt under $1300 p/month that has a few necessities:
 - a dishwasher and an eat-in kitchen
 - a laundry room on premises
 - an elevator if the building is higher than 3 storeys
 - well-lit with adequate closet-space
Hence, I'm putting our wishes out to the universe and hoping, that it will respond through our newly-adopted community.

the dishwasher may be difficult.

best bet is to walk around.

also try Jackson Heights and Flushing.

Yes, hope springs eternal, but I think you're gonna need to look at least a good walk from a train with those specs. Esp elevator/dishwasher but maybe you'll get lucky...

You might want to look at Forest Hills also.

Dishwashers, laundry facilities, and elevators are pretty hard to come by in Astoria.  You might luck out and get all three, but you're more likely to get just one of those if at all.  Closet-space shouldn't be a problem, nor should well-lit, and much bigger and cheaper than anything you'd find on the UES.

If you really must have laundry and elevator on the premises, the suggestions of Jackson Hts, Forest Hills, Elmhurst, and Rego Park are right on the money.  This is because there are more buildings over there such as coops, condos, and apartments which have these amenities.

If you are deadset on Astoria, try Metropolis Realty.  Alex does show buildings with dishwashers, elevators, and laundry on the premises.  My friend has one, and it's the only building in Astoria that wasn't called "luxury residence"  I've ever seen with such things Smiley

I live in a 2-bedroom (without a diswasher but with an eat-in kitchen) just north of Ditmars Blvd. for that price, so I don't think it's as unlikely as everyone else is making it out to be. I rent an apartment in a privately owned two-family home, and I know a few people who do the same. I agree that you should walk around and talk to a few brokers since they seem really in touch with the community here and would know landlords who are Internet-shy. (There seems to be a lot of them since so many of these homes are owned by old people.) You may have to make a few compromises, like the dishwasher and possibly laundry, but you'll still find a lot more space and sunshine out here than you would in the UES, so good luck.

Well yeah, I have a large 3-BR with an eat-in kitchen for the reasonable price of $2000, but it doesn't have a dishwasher or on-site laundry, and doesn't need an elevator because it's a 3 story building. Lighting is fine for me, but because it faces north and is long and narrow, I don't know if it qualifies as "well lit." That combination of stuff is so rare around here because we don't have many apartment complexes, most are two family homes or a story or two above businesses. It's a charming area, but the luxury apartments are mostly only going up along the most southern and western areas of Astoria (by the water) and then in Long Island City.

you can find it. just talk to more than a few brokers and lift your limit to 1450.

its a bit out of the way (about 10 - 15 min walk to the N/W train) but there is a management company on 21st ave and 21st street (there is an office) that has rental buildings all the way up 21st ave. the 2br's i believe go for 1400ish and all have dishwashers and laundry. its also near the park.

i believe its astoria management or something like that.

Two summers ago, that development did not have laundry on the premises, so I'm not sure if they really do have it now.  But it is a nice development, and I have seen dishwashers there.

I am a licensed RE agent in Astoria. The kind of amenities that you are seeking are found in a brand newly constructed/renovated apartment in an apartment building (not 2/3 family home). There are coops in Astoria that also offer the same amenities. The price that we're looking at for such an apartment is about 1500 and up.Landlords pay for heat & hot water so many of them will not have dishwashers and laundry rooms as that is a high expense for them.If they have it, then it is the tenant that pays their own heat & hot water.
If you want to be a bit more flexible, you can reach me at 347-679-3298.My name is Tanya Grant, at FS Marino Realty. We are for fee brokers.

Wow! I've never actually seen people calling themselves " yuppies"!! In any event, I'm sure they can well afford to pay a broker, if they are truly yuppies.

Ahhh, let's call a spade a spade.  Most folk on this board are yuppies and have yuppie tastes.  Some just fancy themselves to be something a bit different.  I'm a yuppie.  Yuppies are good for a neighborhood.  Kudos to DeJewel for just being honest.

I thought it was somewhat strange myself, but then I thought hell it does unofficially mean young urban professional. Although I don't think a poster declaring "Young Hipster Couple Moving to Astoria" would be given this much slack.
