Does the G really go to Steinway on the weekends?

I know the schedule says it does, but since I've never actually seen it and there's always some trackwork going on, I'm not sure.

It would be so much easier for me and my Brooklyn friends if it did.

Any updates on the G would be most appreciated.

They dropped the constant G service when the 63rd street tunnel was connected to the mainline.  Since then, Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Hunter's Point and Astoria all boomed with people and prosperity.  It will always be a lowerridership line, but they ought to fire it back up.  I know there are switiching and trackage issues, but wouldn't it be great to get down to williamsburg seamlessly in 15 minutes?

I really wish there were better direct subway services between Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.  Does everything HAVE to run through Manhattan?

Today, I read a platform notice that there'll be no G weekend service into Queens beyond Courthouse Square until May 28.   Will there be "normal" G weekend service into Queens after that?  They made no promises, and it feels like I haven't seen a G train in years.  undecided

It is a big hindrance to Queens <=> Brooklyn travel, the general hub and spoke subway layout which is similar to Chicago in requiring a trip to the city center to reach another outlying area. I think it's even worse there though based on the short time I lived there.

Makes sense though given historical business and population centers, but I sure wish they'd look into improving it given the current increased populations in the boroughs... we can't all afford to live in the new Hudson Yards area when (if?) they actually extend the 7! And then there's the 2nd Ave line...

There is a G train?Huh  cheesy   j/k  I can't remember the last time I saw a G at Steinway.  I wish they would run the V on the weekends to make up for the slow R.

I just got home from Williamsburg, and took the G at Lorimer to the 7 at Court Square to the N at Queensboro Plaza.  Took me about half and hour to get to all the way to Ditmars from Lorimer, and had pretty good luck catching all trains without waiting too long.  The G was not running past Court Square (this is Friday night at 10:30pm) but there is a free transfer to the 7 train there. And all trains were crowded with people doing the same transfers.  Beats schlepping all through Manhattan if you have good luck catching all the trains without long waits.

Thanks for the updates! I've been taking the N to QP and then taking the B61 bus to Greenpoint and Wburg. You could even take it to Red Hook, but that would be a super long trip.

The only times I see the G happen to be holiday weekends and never any times that I would want to use the G....one afternoon weekday I saw a G going to into Manhattan at the 46th street stop (again, it was a Friday of Easter weekend).  And I second the motion to run the V on the weekends!

Yeah, I've done this weekly for a few years, and it can be very fast if you luck out. Add 20 minutes if you just-miss the G and the N. Still much faster than the L-N trip, which is about an hour. The 7 runs about twice as frequently as the N, so that transfer to QBP is always quick... The G to Steinway wouldn't be very helpful to me, since it's still a 25 minute walk home from there... (Although it does usually run weekday nights.)

How is the G safety-wise?

I ask because my job is moving in the fall from Manhattan to Carroll Gardens and the G and F go right to it.

I find that when the G isn't running (check mta.info before you head out to see if the G is running, occasionally, there's a weekend that it happens) I find that the B61 seems to be more convenient than switching from the r to the e to the g.  I've also found that when it's not raining, my bike gets me to Greenpoint (mental note - I need to make a trip to Steve's for kielbasa) and Williamsburg faster than any form of mass transit.  My typical bike ride to WB / GP was about 15 minutes, and its a cool ride, with a great view of Manhattan when you cruise over the Pulaski bridge.

The G is unsafe during the night.  A little better during the day, but I'm not sure if I would risk it, especially since the train is OPTO -- One Person Train Operation (as in no conductor).
