Why do places say that they are renovating when they are shutting down and or moving?

I always feel for the staff who lose their jobs in those situations, but really, is it that big a deal? I remember looking at their menu when they opened and saw nothing appetizing or appealing on it.

Hopefully another, better eatery will take that spot.

I don't understand the assumption here. Is there a reason that there can be only one location of Sugar Freak?

Does no one else remember that it took over a year for Sugar Freak to open in the first place?  This was even after they had put up signage and blocked their windows with fancy drapes.  If there's a renovation, I put it six months out before they reopen.  Like New Years.

Personally, I always found the food top notch, even if the jumbalaya was too spicey, the bloody Mary's made up for it.  Hope they are on track to bring Creole back to the hood.

why is everyone assuming the worst?  Seriously:  CALM DOWN.  Construction of commercial spaces in this bureaucratic mess of a city is complicated and nightmarish.

The owner has chimed in SEVERAL TIMES saying that she is planning on opening - why would she lie?

I think it's great that she's expanding!  Regardless of whether or not you like the food we should all celebrate when someone is successful - especially when it's a small business owner in a city that is slowly being taken over by chains and big corp.

Chill on the hatin' - just chill.

Noticed today there's new signage out front, and a note that says they'll be reopening shortly (I believe - was driving by and not positive what the note said).

Yup said same chef and same staff I think.  It thanked folks for the kind inquiries.

AND THEN IT SAID THEY WOULD BE SERVING RAT POISON TO ALL THOSE NAYSAYERS AND DUFUSSES AND DEMOISELLES OF DOOM AND DESPAIR ON THIS FORUM!!!

(well, maybe they actually didn't say that last bit) <snark>

That might be an improvement. Always found their food somewhat bland.

First, Sugarfreak is going to open again and the plan is for a late September opening. Michele has been busy helping to open a second Sugarfreak in Brooklyn in a space formerly occupied by the now shuttered Krescendo. They hope to open that location in October. So that’s taken up a lot of her time.

Mea culpa from me as well.  The fact that it's a 2nd location wasn't really clear from the Eater post.  Looking forward to the grand re-opening!

I too love SF and look forward to it re-opening.  I don't know of any other places in Astoria to get some serious fried chicken, potato salad, and collard greens!  SF's rocks.  And I agree with another poster who said that...the decor they already has was perfect...the fabric 'curtains' between the booths...the kitschy and eclectic decorations throughout....

And now we can expect pie?!  Yum!

YES!  I'll be pissed if they made any changes to the bathrooms!
