SugarFreak Closed?
« on: June 08, 2014, 07:03:16 PM »
Walked by SugarFreak and noticed the were closed for renovations.  Never a good sign.  I do hope they re-open.  I really like that place

Greetings!!

My name is Michele, I'm the owner of SugarFreak.  Thanks for liking my restaurant!!!

We will in fact be back, early July.   We are hard at work, making changes that are long overdue.  The changes are very exciting!  Snowballs, are coming to Astoria!!!!   Plus a whole mess of other stuff.

I am also putting the finishing touches on my pie shop, 30th Ave@ 36th Street. Tossing around a few names, really just working on my recipes.   Look for it, Late July.

So, thanks again,

Michele

I have to ask, this isn't one of those "we are avoiding what would have been a failing health inspection" thing, is it?

nope!!!

Nothing very dramatic, just time to make repairs and improvements!

The restaurant has an A letter grade, with zero points!!!

See y'all soon,
Michele

Glad to hear. Some people were asking, so I'll be happy to be armed with info on that.

I hope that the renovations include an actual sign outside that tells people the name of your store as opposed to just a door decal. I find it to be a little unwelcoming without one.

Signs hanging in window say "early July" but they are still closed. Any updates?

Hello Astoria!

A few problems have delayed opening.

I will post when I have an exact date.

Workin hard, hoping everyone will like the changes.

Michele

PS.  Alex, I guess that depends on your location.

Still nothing dramatic going on.
Repairs and improvements are taking a little longer than I expected.
I will post when I have a definite opening date.

Michele

P.s. Philo-Junius, I am always at the restaurant.  When I reopen, introduce yourself to me. I would love to buy you dinner.  I really love your comments and Astorians.com.  I am a native Astorian. I was born in Astoria General Hospital, raised in Ravenswood, even worked at G.T Lawe in High School.  I would love to chat with another neighborhood person.

Anyways, see you all very soon!

Noticed help wanted signs up yesterday -- sad that the existing staff lost their jobs for "improvements." Service was pretty much always spot on.

Not sure what  improvements are being made, but the decor was great for the type of restaurant. It was the food that was lackluster -- good, but bland and uninspired, and not vegetarian friendly. I hope if the restaurant ever does reopen, it's with improvements to the food as well.

I wonder if the "help wanted" sign isn't for extra help to run the sweets side, rather than a wholesale replacement of the existing staff.  And New Orleans cuisine generally isn't known for being vegetarian-friendly.

I always feel for the staff who lose their jobs in those situations, but really, is it that big a deal? I remember looking at their menu when they opened and saw nothing appetizing or appealing on it.

Hopefully another, better eatery will take that spot.

I don't understand the assumption here. Is there a reason that there can be only one location of Sugar Freak?

Does no one else remember that it took over a year for Sugar Freak to open in the first place?  This was even after they had put up signage and blocked their windows with fancy drapes.  If there's a renovation, I put it six months out before they reopen.  Like New Years.

Personally, I always found the food top notch, even if the jumbalaya was too spicey, the bloody Mary's made up for it.  Hope they are on track to bring Creole back to the hood.

why is everyone assuming the worst?  Seriously:  CALM DOWN.  Construction of commercial spaces in this bureaucratic mess of a city is complicated and nightmarish.

The owner has chimed in SEVERAL TIMES saying that she is planning on opening - why would she lie?

I think it's great that she's expanding!  Regardless of whether or not you like the food we should all celebrate when someone is successful - especially when it's a small business owner in a city that is slowly being taken over by chains and big corp.

Chill on the hatin' - just chill.

Noticed today there's new signage out front, and a note that says they'll be reopening shortly (I believe - was driving by and not positive what the note said).

Yup said same chef and same staff I think.  It thanked folks for the kind inquiries.

AND THEN IT SAID THEY WOULD BE SERVING RAT POISON TO ALL THOSE NAYSAYERS AND DUFUSSES AND DEMOISELLES OF DOOM AND DESPAIR ON THIS FORUM!!!

(well, maybe they actually didn't say that last bit) <snark>

That might be an improvement. Always found their food somewhat bland.

First, Sugarfreak is going to open again and the plan is for a late September opening. Michele has been busy helping to open a second Sugarfreak in Brooklyn in a space formerly occupied by the now shuttered Krescendo. They hope to open that location in October. So that’s taken up a lot of her time.

Mea culpa from me as well.  The fact that it's a 2nd location wasn't really clear from the Eater post.  Looking forward to the grand re-opening!

I too love SF and look forward to it re-opening.  I don't know of any other places in Astoria to get some serious fried chicken, potato salad, and collard greens!  SF's rocks.  And I agree with another poster who said that...the decor they already has was perfect...the fabric 'curtains' between the booths...the kitschy and eclectic decorations throughout....

And now we can expect pie?!  Yum!

Hours after opening, I stopped in to sample the new SugarFreak! I got to meet Michele and was pleasantly surprised. It became packed in a hurry.

We sat at the bar and ordered some food. I admit to being a few drinks deep already and didn't get to enjoy the selection of beverages. I ordered the recommended fried chicken with a side of grilled corn on the cob, and it was delicious. At first I thought it was a bit on the pricey side, but it's a very large portion (I took most of it home...stomach was too filled with beer from Hallet haha).

I like the way it looks inside (great bathrooms), and I look forward to going back to try out other menu items when I am a bit more sober.

Congrats to the gang in there. :)

I went last night and it was PACKED!

The menu is expanded and I have 2 words:

BEIGNET SLIDERS!

OMFG - seriously, I could not believe how awesome they were.

Go, eat, enjoy!

And thank you to Michelle and Christian for opening again!  We missed you!

The new menu is enormous, but thankfully the food is still very good.  (And the Sazeracs are still $8, though they only filled the rocks glass halfway.)  Red beans and rice have a nice flavor without being too spicy or salty, and it comes with a a split, grilled half a sausage on the side (in addition to the sausage on the plate).  I also enjoyed the creamy maque choux side, sort of a NOLA version of succotash.

Our waiter told us it would be another couple of months before the sweets place opens.
