Ground red chile - NOT chili powder!
« on: April 08, 2014, 01:33:52 PM »
Ground mild red chile, such as ancho or New Mexico. Trust me, this is NOT "chili powder" that you can find in any supermarket and is a mixture of chiles, cumin and other spices that people use in making chili (the dish). Most people don't know that "chili powder" is a mixture.

What I am looking for is pure, unmixed ground mild chile. I've been to dozens of Mexican markets around the city and have never seen it. I only saw it at the Penzey's Spices store in Grand Central Terminal which is now closed.

You can use 1/4 cup of it as the base of a sauce. It is NOT a hot chile that you use only a spoonful of.

Thank you all. I appreciate the replies. A reply isn't helpful, though, unless it specifies a shop in Astoria where you personally have seen this exact item. Otherwise a person could simply search online, or for that matter, Penzey's is a nationwide chain which naturally does mail order.
