« on: August 04, 2009, 07:31:24 AM »
The Astoria Park Alliance is working in coalition with the Department of Transportation, Green Shores NYC, other community groups and local businesses to re-envision Shore Blvd by opening up the street and roadway to pedestrians and non-motorized vehicles for three Sundays in August: the 9th, 16th and 23rd. It's called Astoria Water Walk- a DOT sponsored temporary Pedestrian Street-and is made possible with support from The Rock Health and Fitness Club and Build it Green! NYC. Astoria Water Walk will take place rain or shine.

Astoria Water Walk brings the DOT’s successful Summer Streets Program to the Western Queens Waterfront. Scheduled activities will include Punk Rope, belly dancing and other exercise classes offered for free by The Rock Health and Fitness Club, walking tours with the Greater Astoria Historical Society, music by local artists including DJ Hank Pollard and Astoria’s own Cat Gut, bike valet parking from Transportation Alternatives Queens Committee, martial arts demos by the LIC/Astoria Kung Fu Club, the Department of Parks & Recreation’s Play Mobile and more! Spontaneous relaxation, as well as fun & games on Shore Blvd is expected and encouraged. All activities are FREE.

Astoria Park is Western Queens’ largest park and features tennis courts, a running track, playgrounds, basketball courts, bucolic lawns and the City’s largest outdoor swimming pool. Its East River shoreline provides breathtaking views of the skyline and two bridges. It is heavily used by children, families, boaters, cyclists, runners, and motorists and is home to fish, crabs, birds, and aquatic plants.

It just feels like the park should go down to the river. And it's an odd road that really doesnt go anywhere.
