John Chodes on the Lancaster System

John Chodes will speak on the Lancaster System of education, which was the world’s largest private school system that thrived in England and the United States from the 1790s through the 1850s. It was a franchise system set up by Joseph Lancaster. There were ultimately 98 Lancaster Schools in New York City alone before they were taken over by the state and regulated by the Board of Education.

More information on The Lancaster System can be found at http://www.spinninglobe.net/lancsys.htm

John Chodes is a free-lance writer who specializes in the subject of education. His articles have appeared in the New York Times, Reason Magazine, The Freeman, Chronicles, and many other publications as well as TV and radio editorial replies.

Speaker begins at 7:30 p.m.

That sounds like an interesting discussion (I was home schooled so I'm quite open to non-government/alternative education systems). I might try to make it. Think you'll be there, TRX?

I do aim to attend the Dec. event and will send a reminder when closer to the date.
Hopefully the presentation is a good one, as I do like when education or history are covered.
The Dec. gathering  may be of more interest to a wider audience. Free and open to public.

They also will have an annual meeting/celebration/ice fest on
Jan. 17 11am-4pm. Will look to see when speakers are expected to present.
The annual event may be of interest to many but more likely would be of interest for strong libertarian advocates.

Confirmed speakers so far include:
Economist Cameron Weber
Gun Rights Lawyer Alan Gura

A few updates. Father knows best has an Op-ed in the NYD.

"It's time to educate New Yorkers on home-schooling"

Quote
A related myth is that home-schoolers want to protect their kids from exposure to some dangerous idea or social malady pervading the schools. Besides the fact that it's ludicrous to imagine you can prevent your kids from learning about anything in the Information Age, it is antithetical to what I see as one of the greatest advantages of home-schooling. My goal is not to restrict my children's knowledge, but to expand it as much as possible.

New York City is the best-stocked "classroom" that any child could have.

Press TV: From here in Iran it appears that the US has been plunged into mass backslapping celebration at the election of Obama. Are you also basking in post-election excitement and hope?

$$  AFF on the Road, New York City: The Road Back to Capitalism  $$
March 5th, 6:30pm

"With a new democratic administration and ongoing financial turmoil, proponents of economic liberty are desperately fighting to steer America back towards free-market principles.

On March 5th, the Obama Administration will have been in office for over a month. Since the loss of the election in November conservatives and libertarians from across the nation have started to think about the road back not only to power, but how to return the country to believing in free-market principles. Have libertarians and conservatives found their voice? With a plummeting economy, do free market ideas stand a chance? Have Republicans discovered a comeback strategy based on ideas and principles that libertarians and conservatives can support? What is the road back to capitalism?

Joining us for this discussion is Megan McArdle of The Atlantic,
Brian Carney of the Wall Street Journal Editorial Board,
and Ron Moore of the Manhattan Libertarians.

Moderating this discussion will be David Kirby, Executive Director of America’s Future Foundation."

This will be held at Open House Gallery (201 Mulberry Street) in New York City.
roundtable discussion will begin at 7:00 pm.

Democrats Divided Over Gun Amendment in D.C. House Voting Rights Bill
By Kathleen Hunter, CQ Staff

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid ’s decision to join nearly two dozen Democrats in supporting a Republican gun amendment could foretell difficulties for the Obama administration if the White House pushes for stricter firearms limits.

Twenty-two Democrats — most of them from Western or conservative-leaning states — voted Thursday in favor of an amendment by Nevada Republican John Ensign that would codify a 2008 Supreme Court ruling that struck down a District of Columbia gun ownership ban and declared for the first time that the Second Amendment includes an individual right to bear arms
