First off, thanks Paratactical for your kind words. It is greatly appreciated.
As for going off topic, I don't recall that we have had a specific conversation about it. I think I tend to be bigger on that than the other mods. I don't mind when things veer off for a bit but, speaking for myself, my "stay on topic" posts are designed to do two things:
First, sometimes a conversation starts to deteriorate and you get a series of posts back and forth in response to someones conduct (and unrelated to the thread) so my "stay on topic" is my way of saying "OK enough bickering, let's end it here and come back to the point of the thread".
Second, is when the conversation really veers off and you wind up having two totally different discussions. I don't think that is fair to the OP so I like to try to bring the discussion back to something that is relevant to the topic at hand.
Also, sometimes people report to moderator when they feel they are talking about a serious issue and it starts to veer way off, so again, it's about not letting the thread spiral out too far into something else. I remember on one occasion I wanted to split a thread because another topic sprouted up within the thread, which was an interesting discussion, and no one would have been able to find it if they were searching through topics because it had nothing to do with the original thread. At the time, I wasn't very good at the split topic feature :oops: I may not have improved much either :| so stay on topic! Ha.....kidding.
