I'm about to adopt a cat from this girl in my building.   She works a lot and spends quite a few nights at her boyfriend's apt so she's feeling neglectful of the cat and starting to resent her because of it.    I'm not a cat person, but having fed Hooker on a regular basis, when the girl asked me if I wanted to take her, I said sure.   For those wondering, I was told the cat was named Hooker because she's an attention whore.   It's true, she's adorable though.   Ugh, I could feel the testosterone leaving my body as I typed that.

My problem is now this...   I don't want to inherit the single-guy-with-cat stigma along with the cat itself.   :killme:

So, I'll attend any gathering with little or no expectations.   Heck, if nothing else, I'll be seen in the company of many single women.   8-)

Any help on breaking/holding off the afore mentioned stigma would be greatly appreciated.

***  my apologies of course to anyone offended by my single-guy-with-cat generalization  ***

I have to wonder if the whole stigma of guys and cats is real.   For anyone who likes cats, who cares what gender you are?  If anything, it makes a man sexier in my opinion if he doesn't give a shiittte about what other people think of him.  That he isn't afraid to show who he is.  Do women really think less of a guy who owns a cat?   Handyman, having a cat is sexy    8-)

I have cats but wouldn't date a guy with them. I've met a lot of weird single-dudes-with-cats. But I've also met a lot of normal-dudes-with-cats. Yet the stereotype persists.

Part of it is that I'd like to be able to go to a guy's house and escape from having to sleep with catbutt in my face every night and awakening to plaintive meowing every morning.

The tristate area is full of single women, while the West Coast is teeming with single men!!    :-) :-(

When I lived on the west coast, it seemed like all the cute ones were gay!  :)

If you don't like cats, you don't like cats.  What has this to do with gender?  Nothing at all.   I've met a lot of weird single dudes without cats.  Hell, I've met a lot of weird single women without cats.  I think weirdness is an equal opportunity attribute.  If someone rejected me because of my pet, he wasn't worth my time anyway.  I don't have a pet, but I'm just saying.  I guess I was never into stereotypes.   They're oppressive and boring.  Life's too short.   :-)

One, that's what bedroom doors are for.    8-)    :2cool:

Two, The main reason I'm taking her is because she's a runt.    3 years old and looks less than a year.   She also doesn't eat much at all.   I've gone down there on back-to-back days to feed her and all she's needed was water because there was still food in her bowl.

Jeez... She's not even mine yet and I'm getting defensive.  *sigh*

One of the coolest guys I ever dated had a cat. It never occurred to me to think anything of it. I didn't even know there was a stereotype for men with cats until I read this thread.

I don't think that deserved the neg nods, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. It's a matter of taste, like someone who says they wouldn't date actors or musicians. Yes there are strange and normal ones, but it's just a matter of taste

As a female cat owner, I think it's great when a guy has a cat because so many of them are dogs or bust. This way I know they won't mind mine. I also thinks it's wonderful that you are taking this cat in when she really needs some loving. I applaud you for it.

being a single guy with a cat i have to say that chicks totally dig him ,
he is a visious predator with razor sharp claws, mandible of death and a killers eye ( the left one).the only problom i have encountered is my inability to understand a freakin thing he says ( i think he speaks spainish). if someone wont date me because i own a cat - fine .i believe there are more than enough resons not to date me you dont have to blame the cat
you can not deny this gorgeosness, you can only hope to handle it

I had three girlfriends throughout the time in my life when I had a cat back home. My cat was my dear friend for a long time. Come to think of it, I haven't had a girlfriend since he passed away after I moved =(

I am laughing hysterically over the fact that this has turned into a thread about single people and their cats.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have 2, and guys who think they are as cute as I do get an A in my book. Having your own cat gets an A+.

I always thought the stereotype only applied to women. I'll be sure to mention that it doesn't the next time I get a Crazy Cat Lady Alone in Queens comment from one of my jerkface friends.

Don't let them call you that.  By the generalization I've always made about "cat ladies", you need to have more than two.   (and a few other criteria must also be met.  I'll refrain from listing them as it may offend (and fit) some readers)
