There is a huge bedbug problem in Astoria as well.  Buildings are infected all over the neighborhood.  Be careful and don't take in furniture left out on the street unless you're certain it doesn't have them in the woodwork.  I personally know of three infected buildings and I keep hearing about others.  I wish we'd have a townhall on this issues as well (after one on the hate crimes!)

This actually isn't exclusive to Astoria.  The entire city has this problem.  4 star hotels are reporting massive bedbug infestations.

I moved out of a pre-war rent-stab blg in astoria due to a massive bed bug problem.  The whole blg was infested, and had to be exterminated multiple times.  But I just moved cuz it was the last straw of a number of problems.  I'm told the problem is everywhere in astoria and nyc.  The bugs are essentially hitchhikers, easy to pick up from someone even on the bus or subway, and hard to eradicate.   Let me tell you, the whole experience was pure hell. My saying it was just a move is putting it extremely lightly.

BEDBUGS. The bane of my existence (though I've never had them, knock-on-wood)... we had a very interesteing thread on them back in Jan is you're interested in the topic of bedbuggery in Astoria:

I found out what those mystery bugs are that I've been seeing! Sow bugs. Apparently they are common, but I'd never seen them before. And they are crustaceans, not insects, so maybe that's why they don't creep me out as much as the rest of the bugs around here do.

here's a picture of one: http://home.att.net/~larvalbugrex/sowbug.jpg
They're a lot smaller than that.

eek, i think that's the thing i killed on my wall a few weeks ago. i also think i saw their shedded/molted whatever you call it against my wall and carpet when i pulled my bed out.
I've had enough little buggers living in my room, i don't need anymore. actually, i found the whatever you call it, when i was doing maintainence in my room to continue to keep the other buggers away.
those don't bite or anything do they? i've had one or two(or 4) marks and i am worried that the heartless bed bugs are back.
my room smells like a plastic encased toxic war zone. it's me or them.

Sowbugs I think are the same as pillbugs?  You knock them and roll into a ball?  They are super common in CA and totally harmless, in my experience.

They're related but not the same - sow bugs don't roll into a ball and they have soft shells. At any rate, I don't think these bite people. From what I've read, they eat dead plants. I have no idea what they're looking for in my apartment.

I know what you're talking about. I had tons of these around when I was growing up in Texas. We called them Roly Polies, but I'm sure they had a more scientific name.  :-) So Californians called them pillbugs, eh?

I just wanted to share this photo of the lovely bug I found in my sink yesterday. Fortunately, it was trapped, and couldn't make it up the sides of the sink, so I had time to take photos of it before it scurried back down the drain. At one point it was cleaning its antennae... Cute, eh?

For anyone not already aware, the bug Harlan posted is the house centipede. They are regarded as helpful bugs because they eat household pests like cockroaches and silverfish, and they have no interest in you or your food. It's too bad that they are terrifying looking because I do like that they eat roaches and don't damage anything or make webs like spiders. I've never seen a roach in my place but I've seen a few of those. Maybe that's why. The only enemy they're going to find in my apartment is our cat.
